Church, Schools, and Vicarage of St. Just, Penwith, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Church, Schools, and Vicarage of St. Just, Penwith, [Cornwall], 1850. View of...the Church and National School at St. Just, the latter of which Mr. Gorham has tried in vain to make useful...The National School-room was built by parochial subscriptions, and a National Society grant...The School, however, was not supported, and for eighteen years was without a master. The building having become very greatly dilapidated, the present Vicar, the Rev. G. C. Gorham, exerted himself strenuously to procure its repair and enlargement; in fact, under great discouragement, it was all but rebuilt, and a very commodious master's house was erected, at the expense of about £400, in 1847...'. The Gorham Case involved British vicar George Cornelius Gorham whose views on baptism were seen by church authorities as being at odds with Anglican doctrine. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the Church, Schools, and Vicarage of St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England, as they appeared in 1850. The photo shows the ancient church standing proudly at the heart of the community, with the National School building adjacent, connected by a shared wall. The Vicarage, the residence of the church's spiritual leader, is situated to the right. The National School, built through parochial subscriptions and a National Society grant, was intended to provide education to the children of St. Just. However, for eighteen long years, it remained without a teacher due to lack of support. The building, which had fallen into a state of great disrepair, was a source of concern for the community. The situation changed when the Rev. G.C. Gorham, the present Vicar, took it upon himself to revitalize the school. Despite facing great discouragement, he managed to secure the necessary funds to repair and enlarge the building, erecting a commodious master's house at a cost of approximately £400 in 1847. Unfortunately, the Rev. Gorham's tenure was not without controversy. His views on baptism were seen as being at odds with Anglican doctrine, leading to the infamous 'Gorham Case' in which church authorities sought to remove him from his position. Despite this, the Vicar's efforts to improve the education infrastructure of St. Just left a lasting legacy, as seen in this photograph from the Illustrated London News.
