Columbine and Harlequin. Creator: Jean Moyreau (French, 1690-1762)

Columbine and Harlequin. Arabesques (decorations with curves and tendrils inspired by plant forms) were in vogue in 18th-century France. Watteau (1684-1721) produced arabesques for the ornamentation of walls, paneling, furniture, and ceilings. He depicted popular motifs, such as the elegant courtship in an idyllic outdoor setting pictured in The Gallant, shown nearby, or as in Columbine and Harlequin, two characters from productions of the Commedia dellarte, an Italian comic theater. Watteau launched a trend for the exotic scenes found on imported Chinese porcelains and lacquer ware about 1707. The parasol in The Gallant, and the Asian face that smiles down from the top of Columbine and Harlequin, are examples of chinoiserie, the playful imitation of Chinese art

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artistic brilliance of Jean Moyreau, a renowned French creator from the 18th century. Titled "Columbine and Harlequin" this piece beautifully captures the essence of arabesques, which were highly fashionable during that era in France. Arabesques are decorative elements inspired by intricate plant forms, often used to adorn walls, furniture, and ceilings. Influenced by Watteau's work, Moyreau depicts two beloved characters from the Commedia dell'arte - Columbine and Harlequin - in an idyllic outdoor setting. The Commedia dell'arte was an Italian comic theater known for its lively performances filled with humor and improvisation. Watteau himself played a significant role in introducing exotic scenes found on imported Chinese porcelains and lacquer ware to France around 1707. This trend is evident in this artwork through the presence of chinoiserie elements such as the parasol featured in another painting titled "The Gallant" nearby. As we admire this etching created by Jean Moyreau, we can appreciate his skillful execution and attention to detail. The delicate lines bring life to each character while showcasing their playful interactions within a whimsical backdrop. This remarkable piece is part of The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection and serves as a testament to both French artistry during the 18th century and Moyreau's talent as an artist capturing moments from theatrical history with finesse.
