Costume oil can prop güira for Tin Man in The Wiz on Broadway, 1975. Creator: Fred Nihda

This oil can guira prop is part of a costume used by Tiger Haynes as Tin Man in "The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical Wizard of Oz'", on Broadway, a retelling of L. Frank Baum's children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) in the context of contemporary African-American culture. Cylindrical tube of sheet metal with cone-shaped pieces soldered onto each long end. A rectangular hammered metal handle is nailed lengthwise to the join of the cylinder with nails. The bottom third of the cylinder has a series of hammered raised dots. When used as a percussive instrument, called a guira, these dots are scraped using a comb-like metal device to create sound

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a costume oil can prop, meticulously crafted by the talented Fred Nihda for the iconic Broadway production of "The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical Wizard of Oz" in 1975. This particular prop was used by Tiger Haynes to bring the beloved character Tin Man to life on stage. Nihda's creation is a cylindrical tube made of sheet metal, with cone-shaped pieces skillfully soldered onto each end. A rectangular hammered metal handle runs lengthwise along the join of the cylinder, secured with nails. Notably, the bottom third of the cylinder features a series of hammered raised dots that serve as an integral part of this unique instrument. Known as a guira, this oil can prop doubles as a percussive musical instrument. When played, it produces enchanting sounds created by scraping a comb-like metal device across its textured surface. "The Wiz" reimagines L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" infusing it with contemporary African-American culture and themes. Through this lens, Nihda's oil can guira becomes not only an essential element in bringing Tin Man to life but also represents cultural heritage and artistic expression within African-American communities. Preserved at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this remarkable piece stands as a testament to both Nihda's craftsmanship and its significant role in shaping American theater history during the vibrant 1970s era on Broadway.
