EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph taken by Harris & Ewing on 17 April 1912, we witness the dedication of the John Paul Jones Memorial in West Potomac Park, Washington, D.C. The monument honors John Paul Jones, the first naval war hero and father of the United States Navy. Standing proudly on the dais, President William Howard Taft delivers remarks during the ceremony. Flanking him are Admiral George Dewey, the hero of the Battle of Manila Bay, and Secretary of the Navy George von Lengerke Meyer. To the right of the President, we see Secretary of War Henry Lewis Stimson, and to his left, First Lady Helen Herron Taft. Admiral Dewey, dressed in full uniform, gazes intently at the scene before him. Behind the President, a large American flag flutters in the wind, while smaller flags adorn the dais. The First Lady, wearing a elegant hat and coat, stands next to her husband, her hands folded in front of her. A naval officer and an unidentified man stand to the left of the President, while an unidentified woman and Dr. Charles Wood, who is praying, are to the right. This photograph is a testament to the pride and patriotism of the early 20th century in America. It captures a moment in history when the nation came together to honor one of its earliest naval heroes and the founding of its Navy. The image is a valuable addition to any collection of American history or naval history, and a reminder of the rich heritage and traditions that continue to shape our country today.
