EDITORS COMMENTS
Don Gaspar de Guzman, Conde Duque de Olivares, also known as the Count-Duke of Olivares, is depicted in this enchanting print after the famous painting by Diego Velázquez, created in 1636. The original painting, now housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, showcases the Count-Duke on horseback, surrounded by his loyal dogs and a landscape of the Spanish countryside. Gaspar de Guzman y Pimentel, born in 1587, was a prominent Spanish statesman, favorite of King Philip IV, and the 1st Duke of Sanlucar and 3rd Count of Olivares. He served as the prime minister of Spain from 1621 to 1643, during a tumultuous period of political instability and war. The Baroque-era painting, with its grandeur and intricacy, reflects the power and wealth of the Count-Duke, as well as the opulence of the Spanish court. The image of the Count-Duke on horseback, with his dogs at his side, symbolizes his status as a powerful and respected leader, both in the political arena and in the countryside. This print, from the July to December, 1891 issue of "The Graphic: An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper," offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time of grandeur, power, and beauty. The image of the Count-Duke, with his horses and loyal companions, continues to inspire awe and admiration, a testament to the enduring allure of the art of the Baroque era.
