Farmhouse and steading for a Farm in Oxfordshire, belonging to the Duke of Marlborough, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Farmhouse and steading for a Farm in Oxfordshire, belonging to the Duke of Marlborough, 1858. A...view taken from one of Mr. Wilkinson's models at the recent Smithfield Club Show...The rickyard is represented on the north of the buildings; and the long range of high buildings next to it, running from east to west, consists of the corn-dressing and grinding rooms; storehouses for straw, chaff, etc.; granaries, cart and waggon hovels, implement-sheds, and a carter's cottage...The covered yards receive all the dung, both in the solid and liquid state, from the feeding-stalls, stable, and piggery, which is trodden down by cattle kept in the yards, and it remains there without exposure to the weather until it is required on the land. By the arrangement of these yards, in connection with the other buildings, there is a great concentration of the work of the homestead, whereby a considerable saving of labour is effected, and the supervision of the buildings facilitated...The house...stands in front of the buildings: it enjoys a southern aspect, is surrounded with a pleasure garden'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from a model showcased at the Smithfield Club in 1858, presents a farmhouse and steading complex belonging to the esteemed Duke of Marlborough, situated in the picturesque countryside of Oxfordshire. The image reveals a well-planned farmstead, with the rickyard situated on its northern side. Adjoining the rickyard is a long range of high buildings, running from east to west, which comprise the corn-dressing and grinding rooms, storehouses for straw, chaff, and other essentials, granaries, cart and waggon hovels, and an implement-shed, as well as a carter's cottage. The covered yards, located to the north of these structures, serve a crucial function in the farm's daily operations. They collect all dung, both solid and liquid, from the feeding stalls, stable, and piggery, which is then trodden down by cattle kept in the yards. This dung remains undisturbed until it is required on the land, ensuring its nutrient value is preserved and maximized. The thoughtful arrangement of these yards, in conjunction with the other buildings, results in a significant labor savings and streamlined supervision of the farmstead. The farmhouse, positioned in front of the buildings, boasts a desirable southern aspect and is encircled by a delightful pleasure garden. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1858, offers a fascinating glimpse into the efficient and well-organized farming practices of the time, reflecting the Duke of Marlborough's commitment to agricultural innovation.
