EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Frederick Sleigh Roberts, a distinguished British soldier from the early 20th century. Sir Frederick, also known as Lord Roberts of Kandahar and Waterford, was an eminent military figure during the Victorian era. Renowned for his bravery and leadership skills, he received the prestigious Victoria Cross in 1858 for his heroic actions during the Indian Mutiny. However, it was his remarkable march to capture Kandahar during the Second Afghan War that truly solidified his reputation. This campaign took place between 1878 and 1880 and earned him both fame and titles. In recognition of his achievements, he was made Baron of Kandahar and Waterford in 1892 and promoted to Field Marshal in 1895. Following setbacks at the beginning of the Boer War in South Africa, Roberts commanded reinforcements sent to turn the tide of battle in favor of Britain. His successful intervention led to him becoming Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his retirement in 1904. In this striking portrait captured around c1901 by Ann Ronan Pictures, Lord Roberts exudes authority while seated confidently with a dignified pose. His distinctive mustache adds character to his face adorned with various decorations including medals symbolizing valorous acts on behalf of Queen and country. This print serves as a powerful reminder not only of Lord Roberts' significant contributions but also highlights an important period marked by colonialism, war strategies, military uniforms, and notable figures who shaped history through their service.
