EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the distinguished presence of General Ramon Blanco, 1st Marquis of Pena Plata (1833-1906). A Spanish brigadier and colonial administrator, General Blanco's career spanned across continents and decades. In his early years, he was sent to the Caribbean in 1858 where he governed Cuba and Santo Domingo. After a brief return to Spain, he was then dispatched to the Philippines from 1866 to 1871. The image showcases General Blanco's strong features - a prominent moustache adorns his face as a symbol of authority. Dressed in his military uniform, it is evident that this man has seen battles and experienced warfare firsthand. During April 1879, General Blanco arrived in Cuba as captain-general and became embroiled in what would be known as the Little War. This conflict tested his leadership skills on Cuban soil once again. This historic cigar card from the History of Cuba series by Geografico Universal serves as a reminder of an influential statesman who played significant roles in various countries during the late nineteenth century. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this portrait while emphasizing its timeless quality. Preserved through time by The Print Collector29, this print allows us to glimpse into the life of an aristocratic military figure whose legacy continues to captivate historians today.
