EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts George I of Hanover, who reigned as King of Great Britain from 1714 to 1727. The image is derived from a painting by renowned artist Sir Godfrey Kneller, created in the 17th century. Kneller's masterpiece, which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, beautifully captures the essence of George I, who was also known as George Louis or Ludwig Georg. Born in Hanover, Germany, George I ascended to the British throne upon the death of Queen Anne. In this full-length portrait, he is depicted wearing the regal attire of the time, including a red robe and breeches, with a white stocking peeking out from under the robe. The robe, made of rich fabric, is adorned with gold embroidery and a velvet collar. The king's attire is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the royal court during this era. George I was a member of the House of Hanover, and this connection to Germany is reflected in the portrait, which showcases his German heritage. The portrait was published in "The Portrait Book of Our Kings and Queens 1066-1911," edited by T. Leman Hare, and was produced by T.C. & E.C. Jack, London & Edinburgh, in the early 20th century. This image offers a glimpse into the fashion and style of the 18th century, as well as the rich history of the British monarchy.
