EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the ancient Egyptian belief in the afterlife and the concept of judgment. The image depicts the god Horus, with his distinctive falcon head, carefully weighing the heart of a deceased individual in a balance. This powerful scene is believed to have taken place during the 28th Dynasty around 400 BC. The tomb decoration from which this print originates belonged to Menna, a scribe who served under pharaohs Tuthmosis IV and Amenhotep III during the 18th Dynasty (c1419-1380 BC). It was discovered on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes (Luxor), one of many tombs belonging to nobles. In ancient Egyptian mythology, it was believed that after death, one's heart would be weighed against Ma'at, representing truth and justice. If their heart balanced out with Ma'at's feather on one side of scales, it meant they had lived an honorable life and could proceed into eternal paradise. However, if their heart outweighed Ma'at's feather due to wrongdoing or impurity, they faced punishment or nonexistence. This stunning print captures not only religious symbolism but also intricate details such as vibrant colors and delicate bird motifs commonly associated with Horus. It serves as a reminder of Egypt's rich cultural heritage and its profound fascination with death rituals and beliefs surrounding the afterlife.
