EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1876, depicts a significant moment in the history of the British Raj in India: The Grand Chapter of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India at Calcutta, where Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, is passing from his tent to the Grand Chapter Tent. The future monarch of Great Britain and Ireland is seen in full field-marshal's uniform, complete with a white helmet and plume. The standard-bearer walks a few paces before him, carrying the regal standard. Prince Edward's train was carried by Messrs. Grimston and Walshe, naval cadets, who were attired in the costume of pages at the Court of Charles II. They wore cavalier hats and cloaks, tunics, trunk hose, and rosetted shoes, all of blue satin. The cavalier wigs added to their regal appearance. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of the British colonial rule in India, with the Prince of Wales in the heart of Hindoostan (present-day West Bengal, India), surrounded by his military entourage and the grandeur of the imperialist ceremony. The image, taken from an engraving in the Illustrated London News, transports us back to a time of imperial expansion and the opulence of the British Raj. The Most Exalted Order of the Star of India was an order of chivalry established by the British East India Company in 1837 to recognize the services of its most distinguished members. This photograph captures a unique moment in the history of the Order and the British Raj in India.
