EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts The Gun-Boat Flotilla off Portland Harbor, as sketched by Lieutenant Montagu O'Reilly in 1856. The scene showcases a fleet of small, steam-powered gunboats, led by the two-decker HMS Colossus. The Squadron, from a sketch by Lieutenant Montagu O'Reilly, now in command of H.M. gun-boat Seagull, formed in two lines, following closely in the wake of the Colossus. However, the two-decker soon demonstrated its superiority in speed, and the gunboats were ordered to spread their sails to maintain their positions. Observe the Red or Starboard Division, consisting of Charger, Dove, Beaver, Bitr, Whiting, Bustard, Mayflower, Grasshopper, Pincher, and Goshawk. In contrast, the White or Port Division includes the Seagull, Thistle, Sandfly, Julia, Pelter, Herring, Bullfrog, Plover, and Ruby. Accompanying the fleet are the Admiralty yacht Black Eagle and the dispatch gunboat Wanderer. These little craft, reminiscent of light cavalry in the army, were an essential part of the Royal Navy's defensive capabilities during this era. Their agility and versatility made them indispensable in coastal patrols, protecting ports, and engaging enemy vessels in shallow waters. The intricate details in this print offer a glimpse into the daily life and operations of the naval forces during the mid-19th century.
