H.M.S. "Euryalus", with Prince Alfred on board, entering Simon's Bay, 1860. Queen Victoria's son, Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, became a naval cadet at the age of 14. Here, he makes an official visit to the Cape Colony, South Africa. Simon's Bay is an inlet on the west side of False Bay. In this bay is situated Simon's Town, about twenty-three miles south of Cape Town...It is neatly built at the base of Cape Mountain, and has a naval arsenal. At this port homeward-bound ships from India usually resort for repairs, and it is the residence of the naval Commander-in-Chief of the station. The Prince landed and made a public entry into Cape Town...on the following day...The welcome which greeted his Royal Highness on his arrival, on his landing, and throughout his tour through the colony, has been of the most cordial and enthusiastic character - Englishmen, Dutchmen, Malays, Mozambiques, and Hottentots uniting in the most perfect harmony in a long series of right loyal rejoicings'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860
