Holy Trinity Chapel School at Reach, Cambridgeshire, 1860. Creator: Unknown

Holy Trinity Chapel School at Reach, Cambridgeshire, 1860. Newly constructed Christian school. As the building is to serve as a church as well as a school, greater care has been bestowed on the details than would have been required in an ordinary country schoolhouse; yet all is rough and serviceable, and without architectural pretence, as may be judged from the cost, which, without forms, desks, and such fittings, but including pulpit, the stores, and the bell, is somewhat under £600...the central window of the apse - a present - is stained glass by Lavers and Barraud. The whole effect of the building, exterior and interior, is very good, and reflects great credit on the architect, Mr. Charles Forster Hayward, of Adam-street, Adelphi, and on the builders, Messrs. William Bell and Sons, of Cambridge'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Holy Trinity Chapel School at Reach, Cambridgeshire, stands proudly in the English countryside, newly constructed in the year 1860. The building serves a dual purpose as both a church and a school, and as such, greater care was taken in its design than would have been necessary for an ordinary country schoolhouse. The architectural style of the building is Gothic Revival, reflecting the Victorian era's fascination with the Middle Ages. The exterior is rough and serviceable, yet without architectural pretense, as evidenced by the cost, which amounted to under £600, excluding forms, desks, and other fittings. The central window of the apse, a present from an unknown donor, is a beautiful stained-glass creation by Lavers and Barraud, adding a splash of color to the otherwise monochromatic structure. The design of the building, both interior and exterior, is of excellent quality and is a testament to the skill of the architect, Mr. Charles Forster Hayward, of Adam-street, Adelphi, and the builders, Messrs. William Bell and Sons, of Cambridge. The effect of the building is very good, and it reflects great credit on all involved. The Holy Trinity Chapel School at Reach is a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture, a style that was both controversial and controversial in its time, as some saw it as a return to the past, while others saw it as a step forward in the realm of education and religious instruction. This photograph, from the Illustrated London News, provides a glimpse into the past, offering us a window into the history of education and architecture in 19th century Britain.
