EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th century oil painting depicts Kenau Simonsdr Hasselaer (c.1590-c.1609), a legendary Dutch heroine who gained notoriety during the Dutch War of Independence against Spain. The exact creator of this artwork remains unknown, but it is believed to have been painted between the 16th and 17th centuries. The arched, gilded frame adds an elegant touch to the portrait, enhancing the golden hue of the oil on panel. Kenau Simonsdr Hasselaer, also known as Kenau Hasselaer or Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer, was a remarkable woman who defied gender norms and bravely led the defense of Haarlem during the Siege of Haarlem in 1572. Dressed in traditional Dutch attire, she is depicted holding a spear, a clear indication of her warrior spirit. Her occupation as a merchant or woodhewer is also suggested by the ax and saw at her feet. This painting is a testament to the rich folklore and heritage of the Netherlands during this tumultuous period in European history. The image of Kenau Simonsdr Hasselaer has become a symbol of Dutch resilience and determination, inspiring generations with her courage and defiance against the Spanish occupation. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is home to this priceless piece of history, preserving it for future generations to marvel at and learn from.
