Launch of the Russian circular ironclad Admiral Popoff, 1876. Creator: JR Wells

Launch of the Russian circular ironclad Admiral Popoff, 1876....the launch of the Admiral Popoff...took place...at the port of Nicolaieff, which is situated on the river Bug, , and is now the great naval station of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The vessel, in so far as the hull is concerned, was completely built and armour-plated, and also sheathed with wood sheathing over the whole bottom, and covered with copper sheets, before the launch took place...The Admiral Popoff is to be completed with all possible dispatch...the launching of a body 120 feet broad, and drawing between nine and ten feet of water, even when light, into a comparatively narrow river like the Ingul--for the dockyard of Nicolaieff stands upon the last bend of the Ingul before it empties itself into the Bug-produced a great disturbance of the water and drove much of it away from the shore in the immediate vicinity of the launch'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the launch of the Russian circular ironclad, Admiral Popoff, in 1876. The scene unfolds at the port of Nicolaieff, located on the river Bug, which had grown into the primary naval base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The vessel, with its hull already constructed and armored, was further fortified with wood sheathing beneath and copper sheets above, before the launch ceremony. The Admiral Popoff, boasting a width of 120 feet and drawing between nine and ten feet of water, presented a significant challenge to launch into the relatively narrow river like the Ingul. The dockyard of Nicolaieff, situated at the last bend of the Ingul before it emptied into the Bug, created a considerable disturbance in the water and drove much of it away from the shore as the massive body was eased into the river. The launch of the Admiral Popoff was an engineering marvel of its time, and the anticipation and excitement were palpable as the vessel took its first steps towards completion. The Ironclad's innovative design and impressive size marked a significant milestone in the development of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, and its launch was a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the engineers and naval architects involved in its creation.
