Leaf Excised from a Book of Hours: Decorated Initial H, c. 1470-1480. Creator: Unknown

Leaf Excised from a Book of Hours: Decorated Initial H, c. 1470-1480. The difficulty in localizing Dutch manuscripts of the second half of the 15th century is formidable. Many shared or exchanged characteristics are found, particularly in terms of page layout, border decoration, and initial design. The present leaf contains borders embellished with brightly coloured flowers (columbines) and acanthus leaves filled in with gold bezants, tiny green leaves, and little black dots. Though different in palette, these elements bear closest resemblance to borders and initials produced by a group of artists associated with the Zwolle Bible (Utrecht, Universiteitsbibliotheek, MS. 31). The original illuminators are believed to have worked within the Monastery of the Canons Regular at Agnietenberg. This leaf is painted in an associated style by an artist who must have been familiar with the Zwolle group

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf excised from a Book of Hours, dating back to the late 15th century. The mysterious creator of this exquisite piece remains unknown, adding an air of intrigue and fascination. Dutch manuscripts from this era pose a challenge in terms of localization due to their shared characteristics and influences. The leaf itself is adorned with borders that feature vibrant columbines (brightly colored flowers) and acanthus leaves filled with gold bezants, delicate green leaves, and tiny black dots. While the color palette may differ slightly, these elements bear striking resemblance to borders and initials crafted by artists associated with the Zwolle Bible. It is believed that the original illuminators worked within the Monastery of the Canons Regular at Agnietenberg. This particular leaf was painted in a similar style by an artist who must have been familiar with the Zwolle group's techniques. Preserved on vellum using ink, tempera, and gold accents, this manuscript exemplifies the mastery of Netherlandish artistry during this period. Housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, it stands as a testament to both its anonymous creator's skill and the enduring allure of medieval illuminated manuscripts.
