EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Lieutenant Theodore G. Ellyson of the United States Navy is seen conducting tests on a seaplane over the Potomac River in 1911. Ellyson, who was the first U.S. Navy officer to be designated as an aviator (Naval Aviator No. 1), played a significant role in the experimental development of aviation in the Navy. The image, captured by renowned photography studio Harris & Ewing, showcases Ellyson in action as he skillfully maneuvers the biplane above the water. The seaplane, which was designed for takeoff and landing on water, is equipped with "spuds" or skids, which can be seen extending from the bottom of the aircraft. Ellyson's pioneering work in naval aviation paved the way for the use of seaplanes and aircraft in military operations, particularly in antisubmarine warfare during World War I. Tragically, Ellyson lost his life in a plane crash over the Chesapeake Bay in 1928. This photograph, taken during a pivotal moment in the history of aviation, is a testament to Ellyson's groundbreaking contributions and the innovative spirit of the early 20th century. The image is part of the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress.
