Mammons Rents!, 1883. Artist: Joseph Swain
Mammons Rents!, 1883. A rent collector has come to collect the weeks payment from one of Londons poorest families. The well-fed and well-clothed appearance of the collector is in stark contrast to the terrible poverty of the family. The condition of the poor was a matter of great concern during the mid and late-Victorian period. This cartoon was prompted by the publication of Andrew Mearns The Bitter Cry of Outcast London. An inquiry into the condition of the abject poor. This had been published by the London City Mission, an interdenominational urban missionary organisation. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 10, 1883

Mammons Rents!, 1883
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful visual representation of the stark contrast between wealth and poverty in Victorian London. The print captures a rent collector visiting one of the city's poorest families, highlighting the immense disparity in their living conditions. The well-fed and well-clothed appearance of the collector stands in sharp contrast to the destitution suffered by this family. This thought-provoking cartoon was inspired by Andrew Mearns' publication, "The Bitter Cry of Outcast London" which shed light on the dire situation faced by those living in extreme poverty. Published by the London City Mission, an organization dedicated to urban missionary work, Mearns' book sparked concern and prompted social reform efforts. In this engraving, Joseph Swain skillfully depicts not only the physical differences but also emphasizes societal issues surrounding class inequality during that era. The dilapidated surroundings and despair etched on the faces of both mother and child evoke sympathy from viewers. Through satire and caricature, Swain effectively highlights how some individuals profited from others' misfortune while advocating for change. This monochrome print serves as a poignant reminder of the hardships endured by many families during this period. "Mammons Rents!, 1883" remains an important historical artifact that sheds light on Victorian society's concerns about poverty and inequality. It serves as a testament to artists like Joseph Swain who used their talent to raise awareness about pressing social issues within their communities.
