EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic beauty of The Monastery of Grey Friars in Newcastle Upon Tyne, dating back to approximately 1860. Painted by the talented artist Thomas Dick, this image showcases the architectural grandeur of a building that has witnessed centuries of history unfold within its walls. Originally established as a friary in 1237 on Pilgrim Street, Grey Friars held great religious significance for the region. However, as time went on, it underwent transformations and eventually became Anderson Place, a private residence owned by Major Anderson during the early 18th century. Sadly, progress demanded its toll and in 1832 Grey Friars was demolished to make way for the renowned Grey Street. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of what once stood proudly at this location. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of mystery and nostalgia to this image while emphasizing the intricate details of the architecture. It transports us back to a time when religion played an integral role in society and stately homes like these dotted Britain's landscape. Thanks to Heritage Images' preservation efforts, we can now appreciate this historical gem captured by Thomas Dick over one hundred years ago. Let us cherish this glimpse into our past and reflect upon how our cities have evolved throughout centuries while paying homage to their rich heritage.
