Moorish Fountain, Algiers, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Moorish Fountain, Algiers, 1858. In all Mohammedan cities fountains are very numerous and picturesque, and often magnificent. Around them characteristic groups are always assembled, and water-jars are very graceful accessories. At Algiers the professional water-carriers are the Biskri, an industrious race from the oases of the Great Sahara...The streets leading to the Casbah get steeper as they ascend, and many of them are mere flights of steps, and so narrow that the projecting upper stories of the houses often meet above the street...[At] the Fountain we engrave, which a Jewess is drawing water; while a Biskri water-carrier, with two large bright copper jars, is waiting for employment'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1858, showcases the Moorish Fountain in Algiers, Algeria. The image, captured by an unknown photographer, provides a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of this North African city during the 19th century. The Moorish architectural style, a fusion of Islamic and European influences, is evident in the intricately designed archway and keystone above the fountain. The scene is bustling with activity, as a Jewish woman draws water from the fountain, while a Biskri water-carrier waits nearby with two large copper jars. The Biskri were an industrious race from the oases of the Sahara, who made their living by carrying water for a fee. The streets leading to the Casbah, the old fortified city, are steep and narrow, with projecting upper stories of houses meeting above the street. The fountain served as a vital source of drinking water for the residents of Algiers, and the professional water-carriers were a common sight in the city. This photograph, originally published in the Illustrated London News, offers a unique perspective into the daily life of Algiers during the 19th century. The Moorish Fountain stands as a testament to the city's rich history and cultural diversity, and remains a popular tourist attraction to this day.
