Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), French general and Emperor, 1912

Napoleon Bonaparte, French general and Emperor. Napoleon (1769-1821) enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, he declared himself Emperor, and began a series of military campaigns across Europe, the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena led to France establishing its power across much of the continent. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to St Helena. This portrait is after Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Duchesne (1770-1858). Taken from R. J. Lea, Ltds first series of Chairman Miniature cigarette cards, 1912

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Napoleon Bonaparte, the renowned French general and Emperor. Taken in 1912, this portrait showcases his commanding presence and illustrious military career that shaped Europe during the early 19th century. Napoleon's rise to power was nothing short of extraordinary. Starting as a general in the French Revolutionary army, he swiftly climbed through the ranks and orchestrated a coup in 1799 to overthrow the government. This led him to become France's first consul and an effective dictator. In 1804, Napoleon declared himself Emperor, embarking on a series of military campaigns known as the Napoleonic Wars. Victories like Austerlitz and Jena solidified France's dominance across much of Europe. However, his ambitions faced setbacks. In 1812, Napoleon suffered a disastrous defeat during his invasion of Russia. Defeat at Leipzig in 1813 forced him into abdication and exile on Elba island. Undeterred, he escaped in 1815 but met his final defeat at Waterloo by Wellington's forces before being exiled again to St Helena. This particular portrait is based on Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Duchesne's artwork from R. J. Lea Ltd. 's Chairman Miniature cigarette cards collection released in 1912—a testament to how Napoleon continues to captivate imaginations even after centuries have passed. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of Napoleon Bonaparte's indelible mark on history—a visionary leader who forever altered European politics and warfare with his strategic brilliance and unwavering ambition.
