EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Official Trial of Small-Bore Rifles on Plumstead Marshes in 1862. The image showcases a group of prominent gunmakers, including Joseph Whitworth, John Rigby, Charles Ingram, Edward Burdett for Thomas Turner, William Terry, and Alexander Henry, engaged in a meticulous shooting competition. The trial took place at the Royal Laboratory practice-range of Woolwich Arsenal, with the objective of determining the rifle that would be used for the second stage of the Queen's prize on Wimbledon Common. Despite the challenging north-easterly wind, the firing was exceptional. Notable gunmakers were present either in person or by a representative to assess the performance of their rifles. The trial commenced with a range of 500 yards, and the accuracy and precision of each rifle were put to the test. However, the trial was not without controversy. A delay of approximately two hours ensued due to discussions regarding the mode of firing and allegations that Mr. Whitworth was acting against the regulations by making minor adjustments to his rest. Additionally, it was claimed that Mr. Whitworth had been granted more trial shots than other competitors. Despite these complications, the Official Trial of Small-Bore Rifles on Plumstead Marshes in 1862 stands as a significant moment in the history of competitive shooting, showcasing the dedication and innovation of the gunmakers of the time.
