The painting captures the moment when Peter III, the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and the new Emperor of Russia, stands with his back to the viewer, holding a leash in his hand, as he gazes at his wife, Catherine II, the future Empress Catherine the Great. The couple's two young sons, Grand Duke Paul Petrovich and Grand Duke Peter Fedorovich, playfully engage with a pair of dogs at their feet. Anna Rosina de Gasc, also known as Anna Rosina Lisiewska, skillfully rendered the rich colors and textures of the imperial court's opulent attire, from Catherine's elegant gown to Peter's grand military uniform. The painting's composition, with the imperial family arranged in a semi-circle, emphasizes the familial bonds and the transfer of power from one dynasty to another. Peter III, a German prince, had recently ascended to the Russian throne following the mysterious death of his wife, Empress Elizabeth, in 1761.
