The Prince of Wales Visit to Egypt: the Great Pyramid - from a drawing by Frank Dillon, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The Prince of Wales Visit to Egypt: the Great Pyramid - from a drawing by Frank Dillon, 1862. The future King Edward VII in Africa. Herodotus was informed by the priests of Memphis that the great pyramid...was built by Cheops, King of Egypt, about 900 B.C. or about 450 years before Herodotus visited Egypt. He says that 100, 000 men were employed twenty years in building it, and that the body of Cheops was placed in a room beneath the bottom of the pyramid, surrounded by a vault to which the waters of the Nile were conveyed through a subterraneous tunnel: a chamber under the centre of the pyramid has indeed been discovered; it is about fifty-six feet above the low-water level of the Nile...The pyramid of Cheops consists of a series of platforms, each of which is smaller than the one on which it rests, and consequently presents the appearance of steps, which diminish in length from the bottom to the top. Of these steps there are 203, and the height of them decreases, but not regularly, from the bottom to the top...The horizontal lines of the platforms are perfectly straight, and the stones are cut and fitted to each other with the greatest nicety, and joined by a cement of lime with little or no sand in it'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures a historic moment during the Prince of Wales' visit to Egypt in 1862. The future King Edward VII is depicted standing before the awe-inspiring Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex. The Prince's fascination with Egypt's rich history and ancient wonders is evident in his expression as he takes in the magnificent structure. The Great Pyramid, built around 2580 B.C., is believed to have been constructed for Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops) as a tomb. According to ancient Greek historian Herodotus, the pyramid was built over a period of twenty years with the labor of 100,000 workers. The pyramid's unique design, consisting of a series of smaller platforms that appear as steps, is a testament to the architectural brilliance of the ancient Egyptians. The pyramid's base covers an area of 13 acres and its height is 481 feet. The horizontal lines of the platforms are perfectly straight, and the stones are cut and fitted together with remarkable precision. The pyramid's entrance is located on the north side, and a chamber was discovered fifty-six feet above the low-water level of the Nile. This drawing, created by Frank Dillon in 1862, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to witness the Prince of Wales' awe-struck reaction to the Great Pyramid's grandeur. The intricate details of the image, from the Prince's attire to the pyramid's intricate design, provide a window into the past, offering a fascinating glimpse into history.
