EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, hailing from the 19th century, depicts the momentous occasion of the Proclamation of the Successful Candidates for the Department of the Seine at the Hotel de Ville in Paris, 1850. The scene unfolds on the perron, or flight of steps, of the historic town hall, where six newly elected Mayors, including M. Monin of the sixth arrondissement, proudly stand. As M. Monin reads the names of the successful candidates - Carnot, Vidal, and De Flotte - from the parchment, he enthusiastically cries out "Vive la Republique!" and waves his hat, signaling the crowd to respond. The crowd, consisting of approximately 800 people, largely composed of Parisians and those from the banlieu, echoes the Mayor's cry, marking the triumph of the democratic process. The atmosphere is charged with excitement and anticipation, as the people gather in the square in front of the Hotel de Ville. Soldiers stand guard, ensuring the maintenance of public order during this significant event. The print, engraved by an unknown artist for the Illustrated London News, captures the essence of the Victorian era's political climate and the importance of local elections in shaping the future of Paris. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the unity and enthusiasm of the people as they celebrate the results of their democratic elections. The print, a valuable addition to any collection, serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of the democratic process and the role of local government in shaping the lives of its citizens.
