Present at the opening were Samuel Morton Peto, a partner of the firm of Peto, Brassey, and Betts, and engineer George Parker Bidder....his Majesty...received the English railway party with great courtesy, surrounded by his staff; and having expressed how much he was gratified by the unexpected promptitude with which the railway had been completed, proceeded to the station...'.
