EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed figure of Robert Lowe, MP, in 1878. The portrait was skillfully executed by Lock & Whitfield, renowned photographers of their time. Robert Lowe's political career began when he was elected as the Liberal MP for Kidderminster in 1852. He later went on to serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer and then Home Secretary during the Gladstone administration from 1868 to 1874. A man of great influence and intellect, Lowe made significant contributions to British politics. In this portrait, Lowe is depicted wearing formal attire with a distinguished bow tie that adds an air of sophistication to his appearance. His gaze reflects both wisdom and determination, capturing his commitment to public service. Despite being raised to the Lords as Viscount Sherbrooke after the Liberals returned to power in 1880, Lowe's failing eyesight limited his participation in debates. Nevertheless, his legacy as a statesman remained intact. This photograph is part of "Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits" which showcases notable individuals from various fields including politics, science, literature, art, and more. It serves as a testament not only to Robert Lowe's prominence within British society but also highlights Lock & Whitfield's talent for capturing the essence and character of their subjects through their lens.
