EDITORS COMMENTS
This etching by the renowned Italian artist Antonio Tempesta, titled "Romans Defeated near the Rhine," was published in 1612 as part of a series depicting the War of the Romans Against the Batavians. The Batavians, a Germanic tribe inhabiting the region around the Rhine River in present-day Netherlands, staged a rebellion against the Roman Empire in AD 69. Tempesta masterfully captures the intensity and chaos of the battlefield, with figures from both sides locked in fierce combat. The Romans, dressed in armor and wielding swords and shields, are shown being overpowered by the Batavians, who brandish spears and javelins. The river Rhine, a significant geographical feature in the background, adds to the sense of scale and drama. The intricate lettering in the print reads "Platea Sexta," indicating that this is the sixth plate in the series. The Baroque era influence is evident in the dynamic use of light and shadow, as well as the dramatic poses and expressions of the figures. This etching is a valuable historical and artistic artifact, providing a glimpse into the turbulent history of ancient Rome and the European continent. It is currently on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world.
