Oberon, moon of Uranus, from Voyager 2, 24 January 1986. Creator: NASA
Oberon, moon of Uranus, from Voyager 2, 24 January 1986. This image of Oberon is the best the unmanned Voyager 2 spacecraft acquired of Uranus outermost moon. The picture was taken from a distance of 660, 000 kilometers (410, 000 miles). The colour was reconstructed from images taken through the narrow-angle cameras violet, clear and green filters. The picture shows features as small as 12 km (7 miles) on the moons surface. Clearly visible are several large impact craters in Oberons icy surface surrounded by bright rays similar to those seen on Jupiters moon Callisto. Quite prominent near the centre of Oberons disk is a large crater with a bright central peak and a floor partially covered with very dark material. This may be icy, carbon-rich material erupted onto the crater floor sometime after the crater formed. Also visible is a large mountain, about 6 km (4 miles) high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Oberon, the outermost moon of Uranus, as captured by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft on January 24,1986. Taken from a remarkable distance of 660,000 kilometers (410,000 miles), this image offers an unprecedented view of Oberon's icy surface. The vibrant colors were reconstructed using data obtained through violet, clear, and green filters on the narrow-angle cameras. The photograph reveals intricate details as small as 12 kilometers (7 miles) across the moon's terrain. Prominently visible are numerous large impact craters adorned with bright rays reminiscent of those found on Jupiter's moon Callisto. Notably positioned near Oberon's center is a substantial crater featuring a luminous central peak and a floor partially covered in dark material. This intriguing phenomenon suggests that carbon-rich ice may have erupted onto the crater floor long after its formation. Additionally, one cannot miss the imposing mountain towering approximately 6 kilometers (4 miles) high within Oberon's landscape. This awe-inspiring sight adds to our understanding of celestial bodies beyond Earth. As we delve into this mesmerizing snapshot from space exploration history, it serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our solar system and universe at large. Let us cherish this extraordinary glimpse into Uranus' enigmatic moon while celebrating the scientific achievements made possible by NASA and its Voyager missions.
