Single Leaf with Lutheran Devotional Design, 1752. Creator: Johann Leonhard Tauber

Single Leaf with Lutheran Devotional Design, 1752. This leaf, which appears to have been created as a singular work rather than part of a book, was designed and made by Johann Leonhard Tauber in 1752. Tauber, who identifies himself as a 63-year-old gravel-crusher in Nuremberg, Germany, "drew" using lines of texts of Christian doctrine, Martin Luther's catechism, and daily prayers. He identifies the ultimate design as the "Reichs Apffel, " or "Orb of the Empire." Written in the most minute script, with the smallest text in the centre of the flower virtually illegible to the naked eye, this work would have been a painstaking act of devotion

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Single Leaf with Lutheran Devotional Design, created by Johann Leonhard Tauber in 1752, is a testament to the depth of devotion and artistic skill of its creator. Tauber, a 63-year-old gravel-crusher from Nuremberg, Germany, meticulously crafted this intricate work as a singular piece rather than part of a book. The leaf is adorned with lines of Christian doctrine, Martin Luther's catechism, and daily prayers, all written in the smallest of scripts. Tauber referred to this work as the "Reichs Apffel," or "Orb of the Empire," a symbol of the Christian faith and the unity of the Empire. The design is a stunning example of blackletter script, a typographic style commonly used during the 18th century, particularly in Germany and other European countries. The leaf measures an impressive size, with the smallest text in the center of the flower virtually illegible to the naked eye. The intricate detail and painstaking execution of this work would have required immense dedication and patience, making it a remarkable artifact of religious heritage. This rare and beautiful piece, which is now housed in the Walters Art Museum, showcases the rich history of Protestantism and the deep-rooted connection between art and religion in the 18th century. The delicate ink on thin paper, mounted on board, is a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the human spirit.
