Sir Walter Raleighs Pipe Put Out, c1884. Artist: Thomas Strong Seccombe

Sir Walter Raleighs Pipe Put Out, c1884. Sir Walter Raleigh (1554-1618) was an English adventurer, explorer and writer, a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, who knighted him in 1585. In 1584-1589 he was involved in an unsuccessful attempt to establish a colony in North America, but did introduce tobacco and the potato to Britain from the New World. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Sir Walter Raleigh's Pipe Put Out" by artist Thomas Strong Seccombe takes us back to the 16th century, immersing us in a moment of historical significance. Sir Walter Raleigh, an English adventurer and writer, is depicted in this comical sketch from Lieutenant-Colonel T. S. Secombe's book on English history. Raleigh, a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, was known for his explorations and attempts to establish colonies in North America. However, it was his introduction of tobacco and potatoes from the New World that left a lasting impact on Britain. This image captures the essence of Raleigh's adventurous spirit as he sits at a table with his pipe. The scene unfolds within an intricately furnished room where both men and women are present. The atmosphere is filled with alarm as one woman throws water into a bucket to extinguish Raleigh's smoking pipe. Their expressions convey fear and fright as they take precautionary measures against potential dangers associated with tobacco. Seccombe's colorful sketch brings together elements of history, literature, adventure, and comedy all in one frame. It serves as a reminder of the remarkable life led by Sir Walter Raleigh during the 16th century while offering insight into societal norms and customs of that time period. This print transports us back through centuries past—a visual representation capturing both significant events and everyday moments alike—making it truly invaluable for anyone interested in exploring our rich cultural heritage.
