The Three Sisters, 1872. Creator: W. J. Linton

The Three Sisters, 1872. Volcanic peaks in Oregon, USA: Striking the forks of the Mackenzie River near Eugene City, the snow-clad summits of the Three Sisters loom up into the pleasant air. They rise from a range of volcanic hills, of moderate height, to a considerable elevation, being capped with perpetual snows. They are nearly equal in size, and all have an exact pyramidal form...These plains are covered with a thick, juicy herbage, much relished by the Indians ponies, which feed here in great numbers. The tents of their masters are a conspicuous feature in the landscape. The sides of the Three Sisters are finely zoned with a broad belt of forest, which mounts to an altitude of six thousand feet...The Indians believe that these three peaks were three female giants, who had been wives of Manitou, and, having rebelled against him, were turned into stone.... From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

The Three Sisters, 1872 - Majestic Volcanic Peaks in Oregon

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print by W. J. Linton transports us back to the year 1872, capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of the Three Sisters volcanic peaks in Oregon, USA. Rising from a range of volcanic hills, these snow-clad summits dominate the landscape near Eugene City. With their exact pyramidal forms and perpetual snowy crowns, these three sisters stand nearly equal in size and grandeur. The surrounding plains are adorned with lush greenery that serves as a delectable feast for the Indian ponies who roam freely here. The scene is made even more enchanting by the presence of indigenous people's tents scattered across this picturesque panorama. These dwellings provide a glimpse into their rich cultural heritage and harmonious coexistence with nature. As we gaze upon this image, we learn about an intriguing legend held dear by the native tribes inhabiting these lands. According to their beliefs, these three majestic peaks were once formidable female giants who rebelled against Manitou, only to be transformed into stone as punishment. Preserved within "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1872, this remarkable photograph allows us to appreciate both the natural wonders of Oregon's volcanic terrain and its deep connection with local folklore.
