The Tale of the Man in the Well from the Iyar-i Danish (Touchstone of Wisdom)... late 10th cent. Creator: Unknown

The Tale of the Man in the Well from the Iyar-i Danish (Touchstone of Wisdom) of Abu al-Fazl, late 10th century AH/AD late 16th century. This single leaf is from Iyar-I Danish, a text based on the genre of animal tales in the vein of Kalila wa Dimna. Abu'l Fazl translated Kalila wa Dimna and offered his audiences a simplified version of these captivating animal fables. The image shows the fate of a man who, escaping from a wild camel, jumps into a well. There his predicament grows even more precarious when he lands on the heads of four snakes, grasps in desperation at a bush gnawed by two rats, and looks down to see dragon waiting to devour him should he fall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from a single leaf of the 'Iyar-i Danish' (Touchstone of Wisdom), a 10th century AD text based on the genre of animal tales, specifically a simplified version of the renowned fables of Kalila wa Dimna. The creator of this artwork remains unknown, but it is believed to have originated in Hindustan (India) during the Mughal Empire in the late 16th century. The scene depicted in the image is a cautionary tale about the consequences of hasty actions. A man, in a desperate attempt to escape from a wild camel, jumps into a well. His predicament becomes even more perilous as he lands on the heads of four snakes, grasps at a bush gnawed by two rats, and looks down to see a dragon waiting to devour him should he fall. The image is rendered in opaque watercolor and ink on papermounted on pasteboard, showcasing the intricate details of the mythical creatures and the natural elements. The man's predicament serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of caution and wisdom. This unique and unusual artwork is a testament to the rich heritage of Indian art and mythology and is now preserved in the Walters Art Museum in the United States.
