Tapestry Fragment, 700-1370s. Creator: Unknown

Tapestry Fragment, 700-1370s. The prominent figure duplicated on this brightly coloured fragment is known today simply as a " Lord, " a term that reveals uncertainty about his identity but confidence in his prestige, conveyed in part by his elaborate headdress. Whether a king or a deity, he was crucially important to the north coast Lambayeque (lahm-buy- yek -kay) (Sican) people, who portrayed him repeatedly in many media and objects, including the large gold beaker shown elsewhere in the gallery. The geometric motif that repeats in the nine central squares is unidentified

EDITORS COMMENTS

Created by an unknown artist, this fragment features a prominent figure that is simply referred to as "Lord" due to the uncertainty surrounding his true identity. However, one thing remains certain - his prestige and importance are conveyed through his intricate headdress. The Lambayeque (Sican) people of the north coast held this figure in high regard, portraying him repeatedly across various media and objects. This tapestry fragment is just one example of their reverence for this enigmatic character. The vibrant colors used in this artwork add an extra layer of allure and make it truly eye-catching.
