EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the reign of Henry VII in England, between 1497 and 1509. The image showcases a crucial aspect of that time - testing weights and measures. At the bottom right corner, we witness measures that fail to meet the required standards being burned. This practice was essential for maintaining commercial confidence in trade during this period. The engraving, inspired by Vetusta Monumenta manuscript from 1497, highlights the significance of setting standards for length, volume, and weight. Selling short measure came with severe penalties as it undermined trust in commerce. Government officials were responsible for inspecting barrels and ensuring compliance with regulations. In this scene, an official is diligently assessing a barrel while a scribe records his findings. Both men are dressed in traditional Tudor attire, representing their occupation within English society at that time. This thought-provoking image transports us to an era when regulating weights and measures was paramount for fair trade practices. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in establishing standardized measurements today.
