Tsar Nicholas II speaking at the opening of the first Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 27 April 1906

Tsar Nicholas II speaking at the opening of the first Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 27 April 1906. The Duma, the elected legislative assembly of the Russian Empire, was established as a result of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), who opened the Duma, was determined to retain his autocratic power over the government of Russia however. Shortly before the Duma opened, he passed the Fundamental Laws, which stated that the Tsars ministers could not be appointed by and were not responsible to the Duma. Increasing tension between the Dumas members and Nicholass ministers led to the assembly being dissolved within ten weeks of its opening. Found in the collection of the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, Moscow

EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: Tsar Nicholas II Addresses the First Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 27 April 1906 In this photograph, Tsar Nicholas II can be seen standing at a grand podium adorned with regal decorations. The image captures a historic moment as the Tsar addresses the opening of the first Duma in St Petersburg on April 27th, 1906. The Duma was established as a response to the Russian Revolution of 1905 and marked an important step towards democracy in the Russian Empire. However, despite his presence at this significant event, it is evident that Tsar Nicholas II was determined to maintain his autocratic power over Russia's government. Just before the opening of the Duma, Nicholas II passed laws ensuring that he retained control over ministerial appointments and exempting them from any responsibility to the elected assembly. This move created tension between members of the Duma and Nicholas' ministers. Sadly, within a mere ten weeks after its inauguration, these tensions led to dissolution of this promising assembly. Despite its short-lived existence, this photograph stands as a reminder of both hope for democratic change and an underlying struggle for power during one of Russia's most transformative periods. Preserved in Moscow's State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia collection today, this image serves as a testament to an era when political aspirations clashed with monarchical authority against a backdrop of societal change and unrest.
