Two-image mosaic of Saturns Rings, seen from Voyager 1 spacecraft, 1980. Creator: NASA

Two-image mosaic of Saturns Rings, seen from Voyager 1 spacecraft, 1980. Computer-assembled two-image mosaic of Saturns rings, taken by NASAs Voyager 1 on 6 November 1980 at a range of 8 million kilometers (5 million miles). Approximately 95 individual concentric features in the rings can be seen. The extraordinarily complex structure of the rings is easily seen across the entire span of the ring system. The ring structure, once thought to be produced by the gravitational interaction between Saturns satellites and the orbit of ring particles, has now been found to be too complex for this explanation alone. The 14th satellite of Saturn, discovered by Voyager 1, is seen just inside the narrow F-ring, which is less than 150 kilometers (93 miles wide)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing two-image mosaic of Saturn's majestic rings, as seen from the Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1980. Created by NASA, this computer-assembled masterpiece offers a glimpse into the breathtaking beauty and complexity of our solar system. Taken on November 6th, 1980, at a distance of approximately 8 million kilometers (5 million miles) from Saturn, this image reveals around 95 individual concentric features within the ring structure. The intricate details span across the entire expanse of the ring system, leaving viewers in awe of its extraordinary complexity. Previously believed to be formed solely through gravitational interactions between Saturn's satellites and orbiting particles, scientists now acknowledge that this explanation falls short in comprehending the true nature of these enigmatic rings. Their intricate composition defies simple explanations and continues to intrigue astronomers worldwide. Within this stunning display lies an additional discovery made by Voyager 1 – the sighting of Saturn's fourteenth satellite nestled just inside the narrow F-ring. With a width measuring less than 150 kilometers (93 miles), this newfound moon adds another layer to our understanding of Saturn's celestial wonders. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph, we are reminded once again that space exploration holds endless mysteries waiting to be unraveled. This image serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our universe and reaffirms NASA's commitment to unraveling its secrets for generations to come.
