View Taken in the Forests of Guam Island, Mariana Islands, 19th century. Creators: Alexander Postels, Alexis Victor Joly

View Taken in the Forests of Guam Island, Mariana Islands, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. Created by Alexander Postels and Alexis Victor Joly, it is one of 65 prints that were part of a volume published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I. The image transports us to an enchanting jungle landscape teeming with life. Towering palm trees dominate the scene, their elegant fronds reaching towards the heavens. The intricate root systems are visible beneath them, anchoring these giants firmly to the earth. Amidst this verdant oasis stands a solitary man, his presence emphasizing both the scale and grandeur of nature surrounding him. The attention to detail is remarkable; every leaf and branch has been meticulously captured through lithography's delicate lines and shading techniques. This print not only showcases Guam Island's natural wonders but also serves as a testament to Russia's scientific naval surveys during this era.
