Virgin and Child, 1400s. Creator: Icilio Federico Joni (Italian, 1866-1946), possibly
Virgin and Child, 1400s. This picture has at times been seen as a forgery due to its seemingly excellent state of preservation and the simplicity of the composition. It was cleaned, retouched and re-varnished in the 1960s, giving in an even, shiny surface, hiding to some extent its original appearance. This treatment was probably undertaken to address the losses to the Christ Childs hair and the discolouration and abrasion of the Virgins mantle. Also problematic is the restoration of the frame and sides of the panel, which obscure the age of the work. However, both the panel itself and the pigments employed prove that this is a 15th-century painting---though of lesser quality than CMAs Virgin and Child Adored by Saints (1924.199). In particular, the Virgins robe appears to have been painted originally with the pigment azurite, a less costly mineral pigment used as an alternative to ultramarine (made of powdered lapis lazuli). The use of this less expensive material, along with the pictures small size and simple composition, suggests that it was made by a member of Sanos workshop and not Sano himelf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the artwork "Virgin and Child" created by Icilio Federico Joni in the 1400s. However, this painting has faced controversy over its authenticity due to its remarkably well-preserved state and simplistic composition. In the 1960s, it underwent a thorough cleaning, retouching, and re-varnishing process that resulted in an even and shiny surface, somewhat obscuring its original appearance. This restoration aimed to address damages such as hair loss on the Christ Child and discoloration on the Virgin's mantle. The frame and sides of the panel were also restored, further complicating efforts to determine its true age. Nevertheless, both the panel itself and the pigments used confirm that this is indeed a 15th-century artwork—albeit of lesser quality compared to CMAs Virgin and Child Adored by Saints (1924.199). Notably, it appears that azurite pigment was originally employed for painting the Virgin's robe instead of ultramarine made from powdered lapis lazuli—a more expensive alternative. These factors suggest that "Virgin and Child" was likely produced by a member of Sanos workshop rather than Sano himself. Despite these controversies surrounding its preservation history, this print allows us to appreciate this piece of artistry from centuries ago with all its intricacies intact thanks to Heritage Art/Heritage Images' meticulous reproduction techniques.
