EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a historic tradition at Eton College - The Wall Game. Dating back to the 18th century, this unique sport is played on a narrow strip of ground next to an ancient brick wall. The image showcases a match between two rival teams: the Collegers, representing King's Scholars, and the Oppidans, comprising the rest of the school. The significance of this particular game is emphasized by its association with St Andrews Day, observed on November 30th each year. As winter sets in, students gather as spectators to witness this intense battle unfold. The atmosphere is filled with anticipation and excitement as both sides compete fiercely for victory. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this snapshot from early 20th-century England. It transports us back in time to experience firsthand the passion and camaraderie shared among these young sportsmen. Hills and Saunders skillfully capture not only the action on the field but also provide glimpses into Eton College's picturesque landscape. This print serves as a testament to both athletic prowess and academic excellence that have defined Eton throughout its long history. As we admire this remarkable piece of artistry, we are reminded of how traditions like these shape educational institutions worldwide while fostering healthy competition and instilling values such as teamwork and dedication within their students' hearts.
