Windmills Near Zaandam, 1871. Creator: Claude Monet
Windmills Near Zaandam, 1871. Following his exile in England during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), Monet stopped in Zaandam, a picturesque town near Amsterdam, from May through October of 1871. During his stay, he painted about 20 small views of the town and its environs. In this example, a lone girl walks along the footpath between Oostzaan and Zaandam. By limiting the range of colours, Monet conveys the atmosphere of an overcast day. Similar muted colours were found in the works of the contemporary Netherlandish landscape painters known as The Hague school

Windmills Near Zaandam, 1871
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an oil on canvas painting by the renowned French impressionist artist, Claude Monet. Painted during Monet's exile in the Netherlands following the Franco-Prussian War, this artwork is one of the twenty views he created of the picturesque town of Zaandam and its surroundings. The scene portrays a serene and atmospheric landscape, characterized by muted colors and an overcast sky, reminiscent of the works of the contemporary Netherlandish landscape painters known as The Hague School. Monet's composition features a lone figure, a young girl, walking along the footpath between Oostzaan and Zaandam. In the background, several windmills stand tall against the skyline, their sails still, as if waiting for the wind to pick up. The dike and the river, with their reflections, add to the tranquility of the scene. The use of color in this painting is limited, with predominantly gray, blue, and green tones, which further emphasize the mood of the day. This painting is a testament to Monet's ability to capture the essence of a place and its weather, as well as his mastery of the impressionist technique. The windmills, a quintessential symbol of the Dutch landscape, add to the historical and cultural significance of the artwork. "Windmills Near Zaandam, 1871" is a beautiful example of Monet's skill and his contribution to the impressionist movement. This painting is now part of the collection of the Walters Art Museum and is a must-see for anyone interested in impressionism, European art, or the works of Claude Monet.
