EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1977, showcases Phase V of the Barbican development in the City of London, as construction was underway. The image is captured from a London Wall office block to the south-east of the site, providing a unique perspective of the area. At the heart of the image stands Shakespeare Tower, with its distinctive brutalist design, serving as a focal point. To its right, Cromwell Tower is also visible, both towering over the surrounding urban landscape. Phase V of the Barbican site was a significant part of the development, with Laing overseeing the construction contract. This phase included the Barbican Arts Centre, Frobisher Crescent, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The roofscape of the Barbican Estate is a testament to the architectural innovation and vision of the time. The high-rise towers, with their clean lines and geometric forms, contrast sharply with the lower buildings in the background. The Barbican development, with its residential flats, was a groundbreaking project that redefined urban living in London. This photograph is a snapshot in time, capturing the transformation of the Barbican site as it moved from construction to completion. It is a reminder of the architectural and historical significance of this iconic development, which continues to shape the London skyline and inspire generations of architects and urban planners.
