EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th century print depicts the moment of mercy extended to Agag, the king of the Amalekites, as recounted in the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel (15:32-35). In this biblical narrative, the prophet Samuel rebukes Saul, the king of Israel, for disobeying God's command to completely destroy the Amalekites and their king, Agag. Instead, Saul spared Agag, keeping him alive as a trophy of his victory. Upon discovering Saul's disobedience, Samuel arrives on the scene and demands that Agag be brought before him. In this print, we see Samuel standing sternly before Agag, who is shown with a look of fear and submission. Samuel's right hand is raised, as if in the act of pronouncing judgment, while his left hand holds a staff or scepter. The expression on Samuel's face conveys a sense of righteous indignation, as he delivers God's message of condemnation. Despite Samuel's anger, however, the story takes an unexpected turn. Instead of executing Agag on the spot, Samuel relents and spares his life, declaring that Agag will be a living testimony against the house of Saul. This moment of mercy, shown towards an enemy, underscores the complexities of biblical justice and the importance of obedience to God's will. This print, produced in the late 1600s, offers a visual representation of this intriguing moment in biblical history. The use of dramatic lighting and detailed, expressive figures adds to the print's emotional impact, making it a captivating work of art as well as a historical and religious artifact.
