EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, are seen aboard the channel steamer, Le Nord, as they make their way to England in November 1913. Accompanying them on the journey is Countess de Baillet Latour, a member of the royal party. The Archduke and Duchess arrived in Dover on 15 November and reached London that evening, where they stayed at the luxurious Ritz Hotel. The following morning, they visited Kew Gardens before taking the train to Windsor Castle, where they were guests of King George V and Queen Mary. The Archduke spent the next two days shooting with the King in Windsor Great Park, marking a significant moment in Anglo-Austrian relations. Little did anyone know that this seemingly ordinary visit would be the last peaceful moment for the Archduke and Duchess. In June 1914, they were assassinated in Sarajevo by Serbian Nationalists, an event that ultimately led to the outbreak of the First World War. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a time before the cataclysmic events that were to follow, capturing the elegance and sophistication of the Austro-Hungarian heir and his wife as they embarked on a diplomatic mission to England.
