EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 16 cm diameter fossil ammonite specimen is an exemplary representation of the Asteroceras species, a member of the Arietitidae family within the Ammonoidea suborder of Cephalopoda, or mollusks. Discovered in the Lower Jurassic strata of Dorset, England, this prehistoric invertebrate hails from the Mesozoic Era, specifically the Phanerozoic Concordat, which spanned from approximately 200 million to 66 million years ago. The Asteroceras ammonite is European in origin and is named for its star-like or asterisk-shaped ornamentation on the outer rim of its shell. This intricate decoration is a result of the complex suture lines, which formed as the ammonite grew. The Asteroceras lived in the deep ocean, and its shell provided both protection and buoyancy. Paul Taylor and David Lewis, two esteemed paleontologists, have studied and documented this fossil, contributing to the extensive body of knowledge about the rich marine life of the Jurassic period. The fossilized Asteroceras is a testament to the intricacies of life that once thrived in the ancient oceans, providing valuable insights into the Earth's biosphere millions of years ago. The Asteroceras is an iconic symbol of the Jurassic period, and its discovery continues to captivate the imagination of scientists and enthusiasts alike, offering a glimpse into the prehistoric world that once existed.
