EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grim reality of life in the trenches for the Australian troops serving in the First World War. Taken on 18 May 1916 near the French town of Armentieres, in the northern sector of the Western Front, the image shows members of the 2nd Australian Division huddled in a front line trench at Croix du Bac. The men, dressed in heavy coats and woolen hats, lean against the damp and muddy trench walls, their faces etched with the exhaustion and hardship of prolonged trench warfare. The trench itself is a scene of desolation, with piles of discarded equipment and supplies scattered about, and the ever-present danger of enemy fire looming in the distance. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the harsh conditions and sacrifices endured by the soldiers during this pivotal period in world history. The 2nd Australian Division played a significant role in the Battle of Armentieres in April and May 1916, which saw some of the heaviest fighting of the war in this sector. The photograph offers a unique glimpse into the daily life and struggles of the Australian soldiers during their time in the trenches of northern France.
