EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in 1975, we see the Hawker Siddeley HS-121 Trident Super 3B-140 making its first-flight take-off. This powerful variant of the Trident family was the most advanced and capable model of the popular tri-jet airliner, which first entered service in the late 1960s. The Trident, a product of the British aircraft manufacturing company Hawker Siddeley, was a low-wing, monoplane with three jet engines, and was known for its advanced technology and impressive performance. The Super 3B-140 was the longest and heaviest version of the Trident, and was powered by Rolls-Royce Spey RB.168-SH-21 engines, which provided an increased thrust and improved fuel efficiency. In this image, we see the Trident sitting on the runway at Hatfield Aerodrome in England, with a team of engineers and technicians in the background, ensuring that everything is ready for the test flight. A photographer is positioned in the foreground, capturing the moment as the Trident begins to roll down the runway, its powerful engines roaring as it lifts off into the sky. At the time, the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) was one of the many aviation authorities that expressed interest in the Trident, and this particular model was being tested for potential sales to the Chinese market. The Trident went on to have a successful career in both military and civilian aviation, serving with various air forces and airlines around the world until its retirement in the late 2000s. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the excitement and innovation of the 1970s aviation industry, and the remarkable achievements of the Hawker Siddeley HS-121 Trident.
