EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment the Barnardos Home Boys begin their emigration journey to Australia aboard the tender Ballarat in December 1922. The Barnardos Home, a leading children's charity in the UK, had arranged for the passage of over 200 orphaned and destitute boys to provide them with a new start in life in the land of opportunity. Dressed in their best clothes and carrying their meager belongings, the boys are filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension as they leave their homeland behind. The tender Ballarat, anchored in the Thames Estuary at Tilbury, will transport them to the SS Ormonde, their ocean liner that will carry them across the vast expanse of the Atlantic. The boys, aged between 14 and 16, were selected based on their good conduct and educational potential, and were promised a new life filled with education, training, and employment opportunities in Australia. The journey was part of a larger program aimed at providing a better future for children in need, and many of these boys went on to lead successful and fulfilling lives in their new home. This historical photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these young boys and the efforts of the Barnardos Home to give them a brighter future.
