EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving depicts Charles Brandon, Earl of Suffolk (1484-1545), an influential figure during the reign of King Henry VIII of England. Born into a noble family, Brandon rose to prominence as a favorite of Henry VIII's sister, Queen Margaret Tudor, whom he married in 1515. The image captures Brandon in the fashionable attire of the 16th century English nobility. The Earl is dressed in a fur-trimmed mantle, draped over his shoulders and secured with a brooch. Underneath, he wears a doublet, which is fitted at the waist and features slashed sleeves. His hose, or tight-fitting breeches, are visible below the mantle, and he wears slashed shoes that match the color of his hose. This illustration is taken from "Civil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period," a work drawn by Charles Martin and etched by Leopold Martin. The Martins were a renowned artistic family, with their father being the romantic artist and mezzotint engraver John Martin. The costumes were drawn from various sources, including tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts, and portraits. The intricate details of Brandon's attire and the rich colors of the handcoloring showcase the high-quality craftsmanship of the engraving process. This historical illustration offers a glimpse into the fashion and style of the English nobility during the 16th century, providing valuable insight into the sartorial trends of the time.
